Choosing the Perfect Porch Swing
By Jonathan Goodman
Over the years we have witnessed many a change in our lives. Most of these have been the result of rapid development and cut throat technology. Many old and beautiful things have been rendered obsolete. Vinyl records are one of them. But there are some things that are timeless classics. No matter how much technology advances, we still cannot do without them. The outdoor porch swing is one piece of furniture that has lasted ages and has provided unlimited joy for generations. Take a trip around the country and look at the number of homes that have porch swings in them. It is in fact an important icon of the American culture. You have had a bad day at work and you head back home tired mentally as well as physically exhausted. You take a drink in your hand, head out to the porch and relax away the stress from your body.
One good thing that technology has done is that it has given us a lot of options. You no longer have to choose from one or two designs. Visit an outdoor furniture gallery or log on to the internet to see hundreds of patio swing designs. A lot of people give undue attention to the upholstery and comfortable seating but for me, wood looks simply too stunning to be neglected. I am talking about quality wood no doubt. Cedar happens to be one of the best choices and it’s naturally resistant to fungi and rot. If you live in the north where outdoor furniture is constantly exposed to the weather, then you need to buy for quality. Cypress, teak and pine are also good options. Teak is the most expensive of them all while pine is the most affordable. Metal swings are common and are chosen by most people owing to their durability. Plastic porch swings are a new addition to the market. They are a good option for anyone who is on a tight budget and wishes to have a porch swing installed in their lawn. Plastic is highly weather resistant. It is also light in weight and easy to carry. The best part is that it requires minimum maintenance. You can simply install it and forget about it.
If you want your porch swing otherwise known as a glider to last long, then you need to take good care of it. Taking care does not only mean wiping it with a piece of wet cloth. You need to observe the paint, the joints and the chain that hangs the swing. This should be a monthly or a weekly affair and you should make a habit of doing it regularly. Use anti rust to coat the chains regularly and this will prevent rust from setting in. If you are using wooden porch swings, then use chemical coatings to protect the wood.
