Choose Your Porch Lights Wisely
By Paul Lyte
The porch lights you choose for the exterior of your home say a lot about your taste and style. There are many designs of lights for porches that will add a dramatic flair to your home and that won’t cost you a lot of money. You can also choose lights that have sensors in them so that they will detect the presence of a person and come on when that person comes within a certain distance of your porch.
The lighting you choose for your porch should create a sense of welcome for your visitors and provide you with a sense of security. You don’t want the lights to be too bright and overpowering, yet you do need them to be bright enough to allow you to sit on the front porch in comfort. Some of the choices you have in this area include wall mounted lights, lanterns, lights that hang from the ceiling and flood lights.
Lantern lighting on a porch helps to give a feeling of going back in time. These are reminiscent of old-fashioned kerosene lamps, but are powered by electricity. You can hang them from the ceiling or the eaves or choose designs that rest on a pedestal or pole. The lanterns used in an open porch should be secure enough that they will withstand wind and snow without moving out of place. If you use hanging lanterns, you should also make sure they are far enough away from walls so that they won’t bang against anything in the wind.
The lights on the porch can also be remote controlled if you wish. You install the wireless base on the outer wall or under the eaves and use the remote control for not only turning on and off the light, but you can also control the type of lighting. When needed the lights can be very bright or you can dim them for times when you need a little more privacy.
The lights you choose for your porch should be in keeping with style of your home. If you have a country style home, then you can choose antique or rustic looking fixtures that will complement that theme. These also work well on modern homes, but it is important to coordinate the lighting with that of the garden.
